Castle 7.21 Review: "In Plane Sight"

This week’s Castle had all eyes in the sky as Castle solved a mystery on his way to London. After last week’s jumble of an episode, it was refreshing to get a solid plot with great suspense and well used supporting characters. Though I will add in that Castle’s seeming hesitance about solving the crime in the air and possibly preventing a terrorist attack would be easier if he KNEW WHAT HE DID FOR TWO MONTHS. Still not over the ridiculousness that if Castle saved the world, that he would choose to forget. But anyway, check the recap:

As if we didn’t already know, Castle has the Angela Lansbury curse, where murder follows him everywhere he goes. On this week’s episode of Castle, he cashed in his frequent murder miles and solved a case in the sky.
Castle and Alexis are on a trip to London (on a known to be deadly Oceanic Air… no wonder they come across trouble), where Castle will be speaking at the Sherlock Holmes Society. He’s a bit upset that Alexis won’t come with him, but soon they have other concerns as the air marshal is found dead in the cargo hold. The pilot thinks Castle’s assistance is necessary: “You’re the closest thing to law enforcement we have on this plane.” “Which itself is cause for concern.”

Castle 6.13 Review: “Limelight”

Castle has really been sharing the love for it’s supporting characters since it returned from hiatus. First episode back, we got to hang with Ryan and Jenny, last week we re-met Papa Castle and spent some extra time with Martha, and this week we got a little time with Alexis, who we haven’t seen since Christmas. Here, the themes of the episode are about looking at your choices and the way they are both driven by and affect other people.

ConStar Watches Castle "The Good, the Bad, and the Baby"

Ooh baby, baby!

You know how when you watch a show on a computer screen, it goes black at the end and–if your computer screen is glossy like mine–you can see your reflection? After watching this episode, my reflection at the end was one big, ear-to-ear grin.
Check out the rest of my thoughts here: http://www.tvovermind.com/castle/castle-6-10-review-good-bad-baby-224193!
Quotes
“Anything else I need to know about you before we get married?” “So many, many things.”
“When we do this, lets not do the dead body in the middle of the aisle.” — I’m guess that could even be prophetic, considering how this show works.
“I have an RHD in child care.”
“I’m suddenly getting a clear and frightening visual of what my future will look like.”
“I’m sure I’ll feel differently when we have one of our own.”
“What do you say, Beckett? Wanna have a baby?”
“How long have I been gone?”
“When the time comes, there’s no way I’m going to let you take care of our baby on your own.” –and then Ryan-interruptus strikes again!
“Thats evidence. Watch those balls” “Nope. Not gonna touch that one.”

ConStar Watches Castle "Like Father, Like Daughter"

Oh wow, it’s kind of rare that we see the murder ever! and the— OH WAIT THERE’S BREAKING NEWS…. OH. Well, most of this episode is based on what I’ve seen from Tumblr posts and other recaps, as most of my episode was pre-empted by awful local news.
Castle wants to get married in space! lol
Alexis’ determination is becoming actually pretty bratty to me. She always gets whatever she wants and when she doesn’t, she kind of flips out. (Examples include her Stanford rejection, her father’s treatment of Pi, and the story Castle tells about Alexis holding her breath until she passed out–he almost praises it when it was a really dumb move her for.)
Alexis wants to be right, but refuses to accept that her father might know better than her. Alexis’ attitude is wrong, and poor Castle wants to be in her good graces so much that he isn’t standing up to it. But I come from a different background in terms of parent/child relationships. It’s well known in the black community that the parent is always right: you do not talk back, you do not give attitude, you do what you are told. There are ways in which this is bad and destructive and occasionally abusive, but there are many ways in which is works to garner respect between the parent and child. Alexis’ respect for her father waxes and wanes depending on him giving her what she wants, and that aspect of their relationship is unhealthy.
Even here Alexis thinks she’s right and will get what she wants. As much as it sucks to wish execution even with a fictional character, I need her to learn some sort of lesson in episode. She’s bossy and, in the beginning, she’s also pretty dismissive of her father’s ability to help in her tone.
I missed most of the episode due to an unfortunate breaking news story of a shooting at a mall in New Jersey, but I was underwhelmed by the beginning and the end pieces. The case was just ok, and I watch the show for Castle and Beckett, not Castle and Alexis (just being super honest). It seems her attitude adjusts a bit by the end. But I really wish we’d gotten to see Beckett and Alexis conversation. they haven’t spoken since, maybe, “Cops and Robbers”, which wasn’t the best last time we saw them speak. I think any Alexis/Castle episode would benefit from more Beckett. At this point, the fans want to see Castle and Beckett form this family and that includes Alexis. It’s awkward that they are never seen speaking and when we do get a scene, it’s mute. Hopefully, we get at least one verbal scene between the two women before the wedding (or dare I say, at least at the wedding?!). They both love Castle so much and while I think they’ll grow to respect each other, I want to see them bonding more over their love for him.
Until next week!

What I Watched Today – Castle "Dreamworld"

I actually watched this yesterday. Thanks Canada! But rewatching.

All in all, this episode was more boring than the premiere for me, because I don’t really care about case stuff. But because I was looking for every little Castle/Beckett interaction, I was paying super close attention. This case heavy episode was better than some other relationship light episodes, but obviously, considering the threat to Castle’s life, I would have liked more than just the ending between Castle and Beckett.

It’s really interesting how in character these guys are but how frustrating who they are makes us fans. Castle and Beckett are dealing with this crazy situation and neither of them really talks to the other about it. They joke about it at the end, but no serious discussion of “hey, if you die” or anything. Also, it happens that Beckett is kind of busy trying to save his life, so not a lot of time to swoon over his illness. She’s at work, she’s trying to hold it together as it is, and if they take the moment to talk about it, neither of them would be very useful in solving the problem in time. So they don’t talk about it. They give each other looks and hold it together so the other person has time to do what they need to do. I would be mad about it if it weren’t completely both of their characters. Castle seems like he’s the open one, but he shuts down just as much as Beckett does. He keeps so much close to the chest and hides his serious feelings in jokes and innuendo. I’m sure they discuss these things together later, but sadly, we don’t get to see it.

I do like the ways in which we could see Beckett crack under the pressure. When they visit Reed, the cracks in her walls appear. And then her going to his house. She keeps her cool surprisingly well, but if something had gone wrong, she totally could have abandoned the badge if it meant saving Castle.

Something someone posted on tumblr made a lot of sense to me. Pi, Alexis’ new boyfriend, is super annoying. I’m sure no one likes him but Alexis; Martha and Castle certainly don’t. But as was pointed out here, he’s Castle! He comes in, takes over, makes jokes, “has a guy” for everything, and introduces new, weird things to an already established family. Which seems like an odd pairing for by-the-books Alexis. But clearly she likes him and when you think about it, it’s totally Castle and Beckett’s relationship. I’m interested to see what this means for Alexis and Castle’s relationship, Alexis and her relationship with Beckett, and Castle’s observations about his own relationship with Beckett through the eyes of Pi&Alexis.

Lastly, I can see where the thread of her time at the AG’s Office is going to unravel. When McCord tells her about the “gray areas,” you can basically see her heart break. She’s so used to things not necessarily being black and white (I think Castle helped her be less black and white about things) but used to people getting the justice they deserve. Or at least going to trial. Now that she knows that’s not a staple of the AG’s Office, I think there will be more and more moments where her desire to actually be a federal agent is tested. I don’t know how long this arc in DC will last, though I believe next week we’ll be back at the 12th with both the boys and the feds working together. But soon enough, I believe she will be back at the 12th. Though what that might mean for the future, I don’t know. Beckett regressing back to the 12th might mean other changes in order to keep the show fresh. I can’t wait to see!

Man this show gives me a lot of feelings and a lot of words.

“Sometimes the hardest things in life are the things most worth doing. Just because we haven’t figured it out yet, doesn’t mean we won’t.”
